From Jam to Action. Enabling Organizational Transformation with Social Busines by Stuart J. McRae @smcrae #sbs2011

Stuart McRae 's talk will be about IBM's experiences with internal jams. Jams were started in 2001. In 2003 they did a value jam . What's a Jam? An online forum on which people can post ideas, discuss them, etc. They learned that what happens on the backend is essential for the success of the jam. It makes the results richer. Jams leverage the collective wisdom of the organization. They have real-time metrics running in the background, visualized to see who's participating, what are the themes, etc. What happens after the jam? Sometimes it's easy. With the Jam about values the values were the result. But sometimes it's more complex. Elements of the Jam are: vision, strategy, purpose Jam! Analysis (e.g. understand why people comment) Champions & Leaders workshop (about 100 employees, face to face networking related to themes) Work streams to turn ideas into action The most important thing after a Jam is to continue the conversation out in the open. IBM and Numerati Revisited

Recently I posted my thoughts on 'IBM and Numerati' . I got several interesting comments on that post . And I was pointed to posts by Luis Suarez (mind you, an IBM-er) and Dave Snowden (an ex-IBM-er). I had already read them before posting my ideas on this topic, but didn't respond to their posts. But too be clear. I was just as surprised to read about this topic as Snowden. And funnily, an IBM-er like Luis says this is not common practice at IBM either... However, as I said, I do find the idea intriguing... and scary. True, like Luis and Ton Zijlstra commented , this is different from web 2.0. For me too, I like the web 2.0 approach more than the Numerati approach. But I do find this approach closer to web 2.0 than my commenters. Luis says: IBM is not routinely analyzing employees e-mail, calendars and chats without employees' permission or knowledge But how does this relate to IBM Whisper and the opt-in 'Social Network tool' IBM runs internal...

Workshop on Enterprise Social Software

Just came back from a nice workshop on Enterprise Social Software . It was organized by the Telematica Institute and held at IBM in Amsterdam. The Telematica Instituut organized this workshop in the context of one of their project, the Future Workspaces (FWS) project . The group of participants was really nice. It always wonderful to be together with people from the knowledge management (or, in this case, more specifically, the Enterprise2.0 community) and openly talk to and share with each other. These people love to tell all! About FWS project We started with a short presentation about the FWS project by Robert Slagter. More information can be found here . Showcase Enterprise Social software IBM Then Erik Krischan of IBM gave an overview of what IBM is doing internally with social media. If you follow Luis Suarez , e.g., you already know they’re doing A LOT in this area. It was nice to get an overview of this from Erik. Here’s my notes: He wanted to give a brief introduction and f...

I'm looking for articles and/or sites that evaluate these tools w.r.t. user-friendliness, scalability, manageability, functionality, etc. If you know one or more, please post them in the comment section!

Support innovation online

Wow! I've posted about the interesting ways IBM is driving innovation and change behind the firewall. But they now use this model to go beyond the firewall. IBM launched an interesting initiative called ThinkPlace . Luis Suarez's post gives a good summary. I registered and I'm! Really curious what it's implications are (and what IBM will do with all the ideas - are they all their's when you post them there?!). Anyway, hopefully this inspires many more companies to open up to the world more explicitly.

IBM Connections and knowledge mapping

A couple of days ago IBM annouced their new collaboration suite: IBM Connections . It's planned to be shipped in the first quarter of 2007. What's in it? "The IBM package includes five applications: profiles, where employees post information about their expertise and interests; communities, which are formed and managed by people with common interests; activities, which are used to manage group projects; bookmarks, where people share documents and Web sites with others; and blogs, where people post ongoing commentaries. "The business market is showing a lot of interest in using social networking tools to improve productivity. It's about helping people find experts and the information they need to get their jobs done," says Steve Mills, the general manager of the software group at IBM ( IBM ). The commercial version of the package is to be delivered in the second quarter. (...) During an IBM demonstration of Lotus Connections, it was clear that the product is e...
