Setting up the digital workplace program #intra14

Image
Next masterclass at the  Congres Intranet  is by  Paul Miller  and  Elizabeth Marsh  about setting up the digital workplace program. Here are my notes. What is the 'digital workplace'? It's consists of 3 connecting circles: the employee's digital home life, employee's digital working life and the organization's digital workplace. Only 36% of organizations have a formal digital workplace program or function. The overview of the session relates closely to  the digital workplace checklist  they developed. The steps that are distinguished are: strategy and approach - 70% of the organizations say they have set up a collaborative platform, only 10% succeed... Do a review of systems and roadmaps and define the as-is landscape of the current digital workplace. Interestingly someone remark: don't focus only on the digital landscape but also how people do their work offline.  stakeholders and buy-in - Interesting remark: Digital workpla...

Tapping the mind of many by @rossdawson #intra14

Image
This year's Congres Intranet starts with two masterclasses . The first masterclass is about the potential of internal crowdsourcing by Ross Dawson . Here are my notes. Ross starts out by point to the Wikipedia definition  of crowdsourcing, but disagree with the "open call" part. It's not limited to 'open calls'. His definition of crowdsourcing: tapping the mind of many. And there's a huge number of crowdsourcing initiatives and platforms. There are two big constraints to external crowdsourcing. It's intellectual property and context. There are different types of closed crowds, e.g.: employees customers The big difference between open and closed crowds is it's important to have a good reason to have a closed crowd. People that you want you to join the closed community need good reasons to join as well. What are the steps to succes w.r.t. internal crowdsourcing? objectives - why? Access better ideas? Tap existing talent? Engage st...

Hope to meet you at our Intranet conference #intra14

Image
As you may know I work for Entopic . We organize several conferences about topics such as intranet, content marketing, Facebook marketing and SharePoint. I’m happy to say these conference are attended by a large number of people and are well received. Recently we published the first version of the program for our next Intranet conference on March 17 and 18. The structure of the conference will be the same as previous editions: 4 keynote by experts in the fields and 3 breakout rounds with talks from practitioners. The main topic of this year’s conference is the digital workplace and the future of work and the organization. I feel privileged to say the following speakers have agreed to speak at the conference: Paul Miller, Sam Marshall, Ross Dawson and Lee Bryant! With respect to the breakouts we have several large and smaller organizations from different areas of business that will share the intranet experience. Some will talk about intranet strategy, others about design a...

Intranet as digital workplace by @markmorrell #intra13

Image
First of all we should be clear what a digital workplace is. Mark’s definition of a digital workplace is: work is something you do not a place you go to. In a digital workplace you can: work from any location or while mobile  have the same or similar online experience collaborate, search, and complete tasks online  choose what tools you can use to do this  feel comfortable whenever you are using  feel comfortable whenever you are using it  be confident you can use it when you need to have a better work/life balance The real difference between the intranet and the digital workplace is that you can get work done with a digital workplace. It's not just a content and publication platform, but a place where you can get work done. It's collaborative, it's task-focused. So, how do you develop a digital workplace strategy? Mark shares several points with us: it should align with your other strategies is wider than an intranet strategy is for the...

Reasons to come to the Intranet Conference 2013 #intra13

Image
On March 18 and 19, 2013 the next edition of the Dutch Intranet Conference will be held. We hope to meet you there! But let me give you some idea of the program and main topic of the conference. In the intranet space lots of discussion is about choosing the right technology and selecting and providing the right features for your organization. Also, we talk about intranet governance. What is the right governance model for my organization? How can we keep our intranet interesting and vibrant? Soft skills What I hardly hear is the skills intranet-related people need to do intranet right? What skills does an intranet manager or owner need? For this reason we thought we’d focus the keynotes on this topic: the skills of the intranet manager and more specifically, the knowledge worker. Because that’s what most modern intranets are for: to support knowledge workers in their daily work. Keynotes We invited 3 keynote speakers to give their view on this topic. These are: Euan Semple : The inter...

User adoption strategies for Sharepoint - part 2 #intra12

Image
Part 2 of my notes from the workshop about User Adoption strategies for Sharepoint by Michael Sampson . (Part 1 can be found here .) We're at stage 3: Enlivening Applicability. Ways to do this: Over the shoulder watching: show how people use the tool in practice and learn from them Group re-imagining: help a group see beyond current work practices Embedded champions: one participant mentioned she connected to secretaries to speed up and encourage technology adoption. ( I agree! ) Sandbox for experimentation: don't go live right away, but start small, let people play with the technology and use the technology for the roll out itself. Easy first steps: closing down the options, focus on some affordances of the technology not all. Built it and they will come: set up the tech and see if users will adopt it by themselves Next phase (4): Making it real. How do you make it real? Provide zero other options. E.g. take away all other platforms but one. Experience from th...

User adoption strategies for Sharepoint - part 1 #intra12

Image
My notes from the pre- conference workshop with Michael Sampson about User Adoption strategies for Sharepoint. (This workshop is part of the Intranet Conference .) Technology is easy compared to getting people to use the technology. Most people aren't first wave users. They don't say: Give the new tech to me. They ask: "Why should I use it? What is the reason for the new technology? My work has to be improved by the new technology." They basically tolerate the tools. If something is easier it's better for them than that it is perfect. Most organizations assume adoption will be 100%. So, there's a problem. The objective is not user adoption. It's the overal effectiveness of the organization for instance. Or, improve work. The overal approach to user adoption is very important. (Refer to the Collaboration Roadmap .) Research shows that people are least satisfied when IT rolls out and the most dissatisfied.... Sharepoint is a platform. This means ...

Join me at the Intranet Conference 2012 #intra12

Image
As you know I work for Entopic . Entopic has organized a conference about intranet for several years now. It has become the largest intranet conference in the World. We’re working hard on the 2012 conference. It will be held on March 13, 2012 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. A large part of the program has been defined and we hope to finalize the program in the coming week. This year we wanted to focus on the soft(er) side of intranet. What are the skills intranet-related people need to successfully implement and maintain a intranet and especially a social intranet. We found three keynote speakers that know all about this side of intranet: Menno Lanting will talk about leadership and intranet James Robertson will give an overview of the changing intranet landscape Michael Sampson will present about facilitating collaboration with intranet We also have a great list of interesting breakouts this year. Ranging from Shell about knowledge management and intranet to the Loc...
