Welcome David!

Image
As I tweeted and G+-ed just a couple of days ago: my 3rd son was born on Sunday. His name is David John (Dutch: David Johannes). He's a healthy, big boy weighing 4386 gr and he's 56 cm long. I'm happy to say the delivery went well. There were some complications, but we're doing fine now. We're all enjoying little David and getting used to him. David's older brothers are extremely proud of him.

What Matters Now

Image
Sitting in the train I had time to read 'What Matters Now' . I loved it. It's a very inspiring read. A great way to tap into the minds of great people. And all that for free! All contributors were asked to write a one-pager about a word. E.g. Power, Harmony, Compassion. Here's some of the parts I enjoyed most: Vision is the lifeblood of any organization. It is what keeps it moving forward. It provides meaning to the day-to-day challenges and setbacks that make up the rumble and tumble of real life. -- Michael Hyatt (This relates nicely to my post about Vision vs Scale .) The One Percenters are often hidden in the crevices of niches, yet they are the roots of word of mouth. This year, your job is to find them and attract them. -- Jackie Huba & Ben McConnell Peer production, open source, crowdsourcing, DIY and UGC - all these digital phenomena are starting to play out in the world of atoms, too. The Web was just the proof of concept. Now the revolu...

Welcome Joas!

Image
Well, I should also blog about my newborn son. I tweeted about the big news before, blogging would come later. Does this show blogging is becoming secondary to microblogging...? ;-) On June 2 we were blessed with a second son. His name is Johannes Arie Driessen. Joas is a healthy little boy. He weighed 3780 grams at birth. All is now well with my wife Mirjam too. Mirjam and Joas came home last Thursday. I inserted a picture of Nathan (my first son) holding Joas with grandpa Driessen. Enjoy! --- If You Read This and Like It, Tweet This to your Followers: Welcome Joas! http://twurl.nl/4aljb7

'Watch with Glittering Eyes...'

Ran into this great quote by Roald Dahl: And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it. Tags van Technorati: quote , life

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays everyone! Hope you have some nice, relaxing days with friends and family. Wish you all a Happy New Year. I won't be blogging much the coming weeks. I'm definitely looking forward to 2009: in January I'm celebrating my 2 year blogging anniversary. Tags van Technorati: holiday , new year , life

Better Place

Just signed the petition of 'Better Place' and inserted a badge on the right-hand side of my blog. The venture to change the way we see mobility and use natural resources has gripped me over the last couple of years. I must admit this is largely due to some innovative colleagues I carpool with. Dutch TV has been broadcasting interesting documentaries on this topic and we've been discussing them and the implications of their statements. Then, recently, I ran into an article in Wired about 'Better Place' and the guy behind the company, Shai Agassi . 'Better Place' has this 'big hairy audacious goal' to change the way we approach mobility. And while 'Detroit' was sleeping and may go bankrupt, these guys are working hard to actually do what should have been done years ago: find alternatives for the way we make cars and make them run. I support this venture to make this world a better place and hope you will too.

Poverty [Blog Action Day 2008]

Well, I thought I'd give it a try. Last year I was too late, though I was planning on participating. But then I read this year's Blog Action Day theme: poverty. That's a big topic and it's a topic I think about regularly. Not that it's a topic I think I can solve or we can solve easily. Mashable has a nice lists of action groups on the web fighting poverty . And they're great. I'm glad they exist. The Netherlands has several of these groups too. Like ZOA and Unicef , to name these two. I don't have big ideas how to solve poverty. What I try to do is give part of my money back to 'the world': the poor, the hungry, the refugees, etc. I hope this contributes to making this world "a better place" (to quote one of Michael Jackson's songs). What I do find sad is the fact that in the financial crises we are in, not much attention is being paid to the consequences this big failure of the rich, Western world we live in (and I am a part of),...

Just wanted to create some buzz for my great Dutch newspaper, which recently lauched an International (English) version too . They have some good articles on the 'new web', for instance, that haven't ben translated yet, but I hope I can share them with you soon!

Esquire e-ink cover

Wow! Esquire has an e-ink cover for its anniversary edition. Boing Boing isn't too impressed though: Esquire e-ink cover a pathetic disappointment.

So, where is Matt?

Is Life Speeding Up or Slowing Down?

Will life slow down in the future or will it continue to speed up? Interesting post on the ever-increasing speed of life by Alex Iskold on ReadWriteWeb . It titled: "Faster - Why Constant Stress is Part of Our Future" .

An Idea and Time

A nice thought to ponder on in the weekend... There's nothing as powerful as an idea whose time has come. Ran into this nice quote by Victor Hugo in: Robert K. Greenleaf, Servant Leadership . Journey into the Nature of Legitimate Power and Greatness .

Happy Holidays!

I'm off on vacation. Going skiing! There's lots of snow in Switserland and the sun is shining. What more could you wish for?! Well maybe one of these "perfect snowball makers" ! I wish you all Happy Holidays and hope to see you in January 2008! I'll be celebrating my first blogging anniversary then!

$100 dollar laptop

Image
Just wanted to let you know I'm excited about the "$100 laptop" project . It has many interesting sides to it. They hope this laptop will stimulate education of kids in the Third World (and their parents will probably catch on quickly too!). On the other hand, keeping the price low, and focussing on their 'customers', also asks for some major innovations ! I understand we will all be able to buy a llaptop at twice the price. In this way, you also buy a laptop for someone else in the Third World. Most people will like that deal. At least I do. But what's this going to do with the pc/laptop market? If you can buy a laptop at say $200, why buy a regular one? And what are the laptop's innovations going to imply for technology and infrastructure? For instance the cable networks that we have? Linda Stone in HBR List of Breakthrough ideas for 2007

Linda Stone is an interesting person with interesting ideas. She coined the term 'continuous partial attention'. This is not the same as multitasking. But it's "an adaptive behavior that presumably allows us to keep pace with the never-ending bandwidth technology offers." She also signals more and more people that protest against the tyranny of tantalizing choices. (Relates well with Barry Schwarz's, "Less is more"!) I just read she is listed nr. 7 on the HBR list of Breakthrough ideas 2007 ! We have come from information scarcity (pull) and are now loaded with information (push). The next step seems to be how we can get away from all the impulses, information, devices that bug us and make us feel miserable. Although I don't feel miserable yet I am very happy with technology such as RSS and social tagging that help you get the (new) information you want, find and remember paths through information and leave out all the rest. Stone predicts that ...
