“Why can't we use LinkedIn for our intranet? At least it works, our intranet doesn't .” Maybe you considered this or heard it in your organization. The question intrigues me and I think we will hear it more and more in the coming years. What do you say in response to this question as internal or external consultant, Communications or IT manager? I'd like to share my thoughts in this post. Dissatisfied about IT The intranet is changing rapidly. The internet provides all kinds of free tools, like Dropbox, Yammer and Google Drive. More and more people are getting used to sharing (versions of) documents, online collaboration, sharing short messages, setting up and maintaining a personal profile, etc. Employees are often dissatisfied about the internal IT-tools and content-focused intranets. How do you use LinkedIn ? Who do you connect to? Do you use LinkedIn Groups? This post on the NextWeb triggered me to answer these questions publicly. Resume LinkedIn is an interesting platform. I've been using it for several years now. At first I basically uploaded my resume to LinkedIn. I hardly visited LinkedIn after that, except for excepting link requests. Some time after that LinkedIn introduced Answers . I followed several topics there, but stopped after about a year. The quality of the questions was horrible and it seemed I didn't get anything back from the answers I gave. Groups I also joined several LinkedIn Groups. Groups is interesting and it keeps me coming back to the LinkedIn site. Right now I'm following 27 groups, mostly in my area of expertise (intranet, social media, knowledge management, enterprise 2.0, social business). Most of the groups have interesting discussions. Giving a guest lecture is great fun, I find. I recently had the chance to interact with about 60 college students. They were in their second or third year. The topic of the lecture was social media use within company. So, Enterprise 2.0 or Social Business. My slides can be found here (in Dutch...). I kicked off my lecture with some open questions. I'd like to share the answers to one question with you. I was curious what social tools they use themselves to get things done in their lives. With all the talk about millennials being digital natives (or aren't they ), easily moving in the social space, organizing their life and work with these tools, etc I thought I'd see if this if the case in practice . I shared what I got from the students on Google+ . In sum, this is what they told me. Really interesting ITConversations talk with Valdis Krebs in the series "Interviews with Innovators". Krebs has been researching social networks for years. First and foremost real social networks, not virtual ones. He talks about how real and virtual social networks relate and what the limitations of virtual social networks are. He says that current social network tools won't have long lives, because they don't map my real and complete social network. Social network tools based on email connections would be closer to reality, but isn't complete either.

For some time now I've been 'using' LinkedIn . That is: I registered and filled in my profile. At the moment LinkedIn invites are going to and from in the company I work for. But what do you actually do with LinkedIn? Wait for a fantastic job offer? Or simply browse LinkedIn and look for people you can connect to your network? What's the use? Build your ego? Many people ask this question in my neighborhood, but the register anyway. Just like I did. Because of these questions I just started following the LinkedIn blog . Hopefully that gives me some answers. And they seem to have started doing that .
