Where to start after you've read a 100+ page report loaded with interesting information? Just finished reading Jane McConnell/Netjmc 's report on 'Global Intranet Trends for 2009' . Highlights Again , the report has a nice layout and is well-written. Here's a short post by Jane on the highlights of the report. In this post I'll share my highlights with you. Of course, much more can be and should be said about this report. My highlights are definitely biased by the issues we're running into with and the hopes we have for our intranet. Way of working? Generally speaking senior management is not really on board yet. 14% of the respondents say their senior management considers the intranet to be "business critical". For a couple of years now we've been participating in this survey. I wrote about it a couple of times (e.g here and here ). I enjoy participating for lots of reasons. Jane did it again! Her Global Intranet Trends for 2011 report is out. And it's loaded with all kinds of information about the intranet. Fact and figures, stories and trends. As in previous years I'll pass on some of my highlights from the report. For two reasons: to show you what a great resource this report is, and, to get you to buy it. I think it's worth your money. There's something strange about the intranet. The intranet has been around for a long time now. Some say the intranet is 'so passé'. Social media is the new intranet. At the same time when I read this report I wonder: if the intranet has been along for so long, how come so few companies get their intranet right? Why isn't it the case that we just copy the great practices of other intranet concepts and technologies to have our own great intranet? Of course I know the answer to at least part of this question. Just wanted to make some noise for the Global Intranet Survey 2010 . The survey is set up yearly by intranet expert Jane McConnell . We have participated in this survey for a couple of years and hope to do so this year as well. It's a great way to way to evaluate your intranet by filling in the survey and learning from the overall survey results. It must take Jane McConnell a lot of time to write her yearly Global Intranet Trends report . 300 organizations participated in her Intranet survey this year! At least it took me a lot of time to read the report! But it was well worth my time again . And I'm sure it's worth your time (and money) as well. Recently I published two posts about Jane McConnell's Global Intranet Trends Report 2012 . I shared some of the interesting information that can be found in it. In this post I'd like to reflect a bit about the findings. The usual suspects Last year I wondered if any progress was made in the intranet space. Some improvements could be seen. But the topics like intranet governance, search and measuring gave lots of organizations a hard time. This hasn't changed much this year. Even though most intranet managers know these are the topics that can get your intranet from good to great, not very many spend a lot of time on them. Or, and I think this is mostly the case, the intranet managers simply don't have the time and money to spend on them. The intranet is a nice-to-have tool, but not essential to the business. I'd like to make some noise for Jane McConnell's Global Intranet & Portal Strategies Survey 2008 . She's been doing this for several years now. The results are very insightful. By participating to this survey you get a wonderful overview of the state-of-affairs of company intranet and portals, how companies organize their intranet and portals, roll them out, apply web 2.0 stuff to it, what technology platforms are used, etc. etc. So, you want to join in and would like to know how? Column Two has an interesting list of questions about intranet . Not all questions are clear. What does this question mean, for instance? "Working more effectively with business units re content?". Hopefully these questions will be elaborated on more soon (and maybe even answered?). However I think it's pretty good. How do you evaluate your intranet? There are lots of ways to evaluate. Interviews with users, intranet analytics, internal polls, scan by a consultant, etc. Participating in an international survey is another way. For this reason I'd like to advise you to join Jane McConnell's Global Web Workplace Survey . By participating you get access to the survey results containing a huge amount of information about intranet trends but also the state of affairs of intranet in the world. Last year 440 companies participated. It would be great if even more would participate this year! In my last post  I shared some of my highlights from Jane McConnell 's Global Digital Workplace Trends 2012 report. We left off describing how some organizations used their intranet to support employees in the field. This brings us to the mobile intranet. Mobiel intranet Delivering the intranet and digital workplace to mobile was seen as important by 7% of the respondents in 2011. In 2012 30% thinks mobile is important and is investing. I'm disappointed to see that IT is defining the strategy in this area, according to the report. The goal of mobile is to improve communication and productivity. Corporate news and the people finder are the most important mobile intranet features. I would hope mobile is a business initiative with business in the lead and that the mobile features would be more closely related to the core business processes. Just wanted to write a short post to create some buzz for Jane McConnell ’s latest Global Intranet Trends 2011 report . I hope you all go and read it. Jane posted a couple of highlight posts about the report. I’m reading it now and will write one or more posts about it. I love reading the report. You get a great overview of the state of affairs in the (social) intranet landscape. It’s also a great way to benchmark your intranet or an intranet you’re working on. This year Jane also published a free executive snapshot . It gives you a good idea of the quality and richness of the report. I hope you go ahead and download/buy the report. And also participate in the survey next year!

Oops, missed the 1st minutes of Neil Morgan , Head of Global Intranet at WWF International (5000 employees). How did they get to their new collaboration platform? Surveyed users by asking questions and watching the way they worked. Based on the survey’s they came up with personas. They found that lots of work was very labor intensive. To address their ‘problems’ they turned to Google. People were already using Gmail, Google Docs, etc. They went for Google Apps: Calendars Docs (e.g. Forms), Spreadsheets Presentations Google Sites (best practices, wiki space, etc.) Neil stresses how really simple it was to set up Google Apps and how simple it is too use. He also shows how well the parts of Google Apps integrate. Search Docs or Search All from one box. Create a document, share it easily and chat about it in the sidebar. Etc.
